◇ History of Reiki ◇

Reiki origine

About 90 years ago (in 1922), Mikao Usui Sensei*(1865-1926) attained enlightenment, and a healing ability was bestowed upon him at the end of his 21days fasting meditation. It is said that those "hands-on treatments" were done by saints all over the world in ancient times. However, Usui Sensei developed a system to teach Reiki. He thought Reiki was not only for special people, and he wanted to share this joy with everybody. Thus he started "Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai" and dedicated his life to Reiki activities.

*Sensei means master or teacher

Reiki in the west

One of the master students of Usui Sensei was Chujiro Hayashi Sensei(1879-1940). He learned Reiki and opened his own clinic named "Hayashi Reiki Kenkyukai". Then, Mrs. Hawayo Takata(1900-1980), who suffered from a serious disease came to Hayashi Sensei to take his Reiki treatments. She was a Japanese-American from Hawaii. She called off the operation that had already been scheduled.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata completely recovered with Reiki. After that, she learned Reiki from Hayashi Sensei and opened her Reiki clinic in Hawaii. In her later- years, she taught 22 master/teachers. This lineage from Takata Sensei has been continuously passed on to today's western Reiki system.

Traditional Japanese Reiki

While Reiki crossed the sea and became a "healing technique" rather than a sort of "medical treatment" and might be affected by New Age movement, Traditional Japanese Reiki still exists in Japan. In the first place, we can consider "Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai" opened by Usui Sensei. However, currently they don't seek any new members without a referral. There is no website or documents that an outsider can officially access.  However, we still have chances to learn "Traditional Japanese Reiki" through the lineage of Hayashi Sensei:

Chiyoko Yamaguchi Sensei learned Reiki from Hayashi Sensei and taught her son Tadao and Hyakuten Inamoto, a Buddhist monk. Tadao Yamauchi Sensei founded "Jikiden Reiki", and Inamoto Sensei founded "Komyo Reiki Kai". These two systems are examples of Traditional Japanese Reiki.

Our manual covers Hyakuten Sensei's "Komyo Reiki" plus a bit of the essence of western Reiki from Hawayo Takata Sensei.
